Here's a simple method to pick winners when you're new to greyhound handicapping. It won't hit every time and it won't make you rich, but it will start to show you how to handicap a program, simply and quickly. It will help if you have a program handy while you read this.
Look at the first race. Now, look at the dogs' winning times in their last races. Give a check mark to the 3 dogs with the fastest times. Now, find the dogs who have won a race at the same grade as the grade of this race. Give them a check mark.

If any dog gets a check mark for both time and grade, circle it. Then, watch the odds. If that dog is at 4-1 odds or lower at two minutes before the post time, bet it to win, but only to win. Don't wheel it, key it or bet it in any exotic bets.
Many times, dogs at odds of 4-1 or lower win races. Many times, dogs who have the fastest time in their last race, win races. Dogs who have won in the grade they're running in today have a good chance of repeating that win.
So, if you want to bet something, but don't feel as if you know enough about greyhound handicapping to pick winners, try this little mini-system until you're better at picking dogs to bet. Once you've gone to the track a few times, look at some of the other factors that indicate that a dog is a good bet.
Is it in a post that it prefers? Does it break and/or have early speed? If so, how many other dogs have early speed and get out of the box fast? Where does it run and will it have room to run there, or will other dogs be trying to run in that lane also? There are so many things that affect the outcome of a greyhound race. This is one reason why, when you're ready for more than a simple little mini-system, a real handicapping system is the logical next step.
