Dog Racing Tips For Beginners

Here's a simple method to pick winners when you're new to greyhound handicapping. It won't hit every time and it won't make you rich, but it will start to show you how to handicap a program, simply and quickly. It will help if you have a program handy while you read this.

Look at the first race. Now, look at the dogs' winning times in their last races. Give a check mark to the 3 dogs with the fastest times. Now, find the dogs who have won a race at the same grade as the grade of this race. Give them a check mark.

Dog Harness

If any dog gets a check mark for both time and grade, circle it. Then, watch the odds. If that dog is at 4-1 odds or lower at two minutes before the post time, bet it to win, but only to win. Don't wheel it, key it or bet it in any exotic bets.

Dog Racing Tips For Beginners

Many times, dogs at odds of 4-1 or lower win races. Many times, dogs who have the fastest time in their last race, win races. Dogs who have won in the grade they're running in today have a good chance of repeating that win.

So, if you want to bet something, but don't feel as if you know enough about greyhound handicapping to pick winners, try this little mini-system until you're better at picking dogs to bet. Once you've gone to the track a few times, look at some of the other factors that indicate that a dog is a good bet.

Is it in a post that it prefers? Does it break and/or have early speed? If so, how many other dogs have early speed and get out of the box fast? Where does it run and will it have room to run there, or will other dogs be trying to run in that lane also? There are so many things that affect the outcome of a greyhound race. This is one reason why, when you're ready for more than a simple little mini-system, a real handicapping system is the logical next step.

Easy Tips on How to Care For Pug Puppies

A Pug is a wonderful breed to adopt and learning how to care for Pug puppies is imperative before you bring a new puppy into your home.

Like all puppies, Pugs need the right nutrients for development, especially in their first year. Proper nutrition contributes a great deal to brain development and total health so you want to be sure to feed your puppy a good quality, nutritious dog food.

Dog Harness

How do you tell if your dog food is the best?

Easy Tips on How to Care For Pug Puppies

It is vital to review the label on any bag of dog food that you buy before using it, to make certain that it contains only healthy ingredients and does not have filler. By verifying that chicken, lamb or beef meal is the first ingredient listed, you will ensure that your young pug will get enough protein. It is unwise to give your leftovers to your pug. You should also be careful not to overfeed him, as this can lead to him becoming overweight.

Providing the best care for pug puppies also includes getting the right supplies such as bowls for food and water. Also, look for a harness that fits well and a leash for your little guy, as well as a crate of an appropriate size and a dog bed. And don't forget toys to keep your Pug entertained!

A lot of care must be taken while buying food and water bowls for your pup. The depth and narrowness of the bowl is very important. You should buy bowls which are wide and shallow as then the risk of your pup having eye infections due to constant touching of the puppies eyes to the bowl's side or the food is almost eliminated.

The size of the crate and dog bed for your Pug is very important. These puppies although very small at the beginning will grow up ,so pick up something which will be able to house him through a period of time. If you are going for a larger crate you can divide it using a partition when he is small and latter on remove the partition to accommodate him after he has grown up.

It is a good idea to use a harness on your Pug instead of a dog collar. A harness fits around the dog's body, as opposed to collars that are attached around the dog's neck. Pulling on a collar can constrict the windpipe and this can lead to choking. To avoid damage to your Pug's windpipe or any other potential problems, the best choice is a harness.

If you've got a good head on your shoulders and know the basics of good canine care, you'll have no problem learning how to care for Pug puppies. Just be sure to provide good food, a loving home, and proper veterinarian care, and you'll have a healthy and happy buddy for life!

Cell Carp Bait Recipe Secrets And How To Make Homemade Boilies Totally Irresistible!

Many anglers use readymade boilies and wish they could cut their costs by making totally unique and highly potent homemade baits, and also make powerful homemade baits that will beat readymade baits! These are both very possible and exciting objectives providing that you have enough information to truly understand exactly what you are doing! This article is extremely revealing; so do not miss out!

To answer the issue of making uniquely potent homemade baits and designing bait recipes that will out fish literally all readymade baits takes a series of book, so 1 article will not be sufficient. However some very important and vital keys to success can be revealed here as further guidance, which you will not read in any carp magazine!

Dog Harness

Many anglers have heard of me and read pieces on baits and bait secrets that I have written in various carp fishing magazines over the past 6 years. I am passionate about helping anglers seriously improve their catches but using readymade baits is actually not on my list in achieving this goal and this is because you can do better using your own homemade baits! Winter time is the most revealing point that tests when your homemade baits are designed correctly so the point about making baits active is a very vital one if you are aiming to make the most potent homemade baits you possibly can and beat readymade baits such as various active baits such as Mainline Cell and others.

Cell Carp Bait Recipe Secrets And How To Make Homemade Boilies Totally Irresistible!

I can say this with total confidence not merely from my own experiences over the past 35 years fishing homemade baits against readymade mixes and readymade boilies but also from feedback from countless readers from around the world who have added to my knowledge and awareness of the amazing catches that can be achieved by using extra special homemade baits!

When you think about it, basically any carp bait is a homemade bait of a kind. Certainly the old style recipes from before mid nineteen eighties were all based homemade baits that anglers turned into commercial baits. The situation today is that the vast majority of commercial carp baits are not far from recipes that were being sold as commercial base mixes and early readymade boilies even back as far as the early nineteen seventies and earlier than that.

Although many bait recipes are about instant attraction exploiting concentrated flavours in high levels in a low nutritional value carbohydrate dominated base, so called balanced nutritional value baits (or food baits) are also another very prominent type of readymade bait today. Many boilie recipes involve a combination of approaches to stimulate fish so that they have a degree of instant stimulation and attraction and some are far more orientated towards the short term, and others are more suitable for the long term.

You can exploit these different approaches within a single carefully designed homemade bait recipe. Carp baits truly only have one aim and that is to deliver your hook actually inside the mouth of the fish. It does not even matter of a fish is feeling hungry and is merely curious about a new object that is unfamiliar entering its aquatic environment. As carp have no hands they can only test baits ultimately by taking them into their mouths so that the majority of their sensory systems can analyze of the new object is an opportunity or a threat.

Big carp are especially wary today having had exposure to endless bait recipes over decades with ever increasing fishing pressure placed on them. But the thing to always remember about carp is that we anglers actually programme their behaviours by the baits we offer and the tackle we place into their world and actually by our obvious presence on the banks of a carp lake. In fact the features, characteristics, modes of action and detailed impacts of our baits really do all add up to either tip a fish over the edge of caution and take that hook bait or fear it too much and reject it as if it did not even exist!

To beat readymade baits is very simple on some levels. The features and characteristics and modes of action in the water of baits really matter. Also the ways that your baits excite fish sensory systems in specific ways and alter internal processes such as boosting vital energy levels and speeding up digestion and levels of activity etc can be very much more harnessed in unique ways by homemade bait makers with enough information!

You can exploit and change instinctive behaviours and alter habitual feeding patterns and even the different modes of carp feeding and the intensity of feeding in multiple ways on multiple levels. You can also excite fish in very powerful alternative ways once baits are eaten and are broken down inside fish to programme fish to respond far more strongly to your specific unique bait formulations.

All these things and more impact on fish behaviours and ultimately change the balance of hormones, amino acids etc within the brain of carp that directly lead to a different chemical balance in the body which changes mood and stimulates muscular contractions in fish leading to fish swimming towards baits issuing a concentration gradient of dissolved bait components. This is complicated stuff but can be achieved using substances and methods that anyone can exploit given the information to do it.

I will get into Mainline Cell and other similar kinds of baits in due course but first I will set the scene so you appreciate a bit more about where I am coming from in terms of what really matters in carp baits!

In my experience, to create unique homemade baits that beat any readymade bait is not a hard thing to do. One simple fact about readymade baits is that they really are a commercial profit making product that encompasses a host of limits and compromises. These include how long baits stay functionally intact and also actually how a bait is perceived by the buying public so that they appeal to some degree to them to induce anglers to buy them; this can be exploited massively by the homemade bait maker!

It is a fact that a notable number of fantastic baits have failed as commercial products either because they simply have been too costly to produce and sell to actually keep on making a profit, or were simply not perceived as successful carp baits by the buying public! Just one example comes from the very early eighties when I was exploiting a host of unusual readymade ground baits within my homemade boilie recipes. I would try anything unusual so that my baits had a new edge and so I was used to taking calculated risks with my baits and leaned on my experience of doing this since beginning carp fishing and making special paste baits when a young boy.

I was very skeptical about using one particular mix as it was based on herbs and when opened the bag of powder had an extremely pungent aroma of thyme, basil and so on which made me wonder at the time why on earth a carp would be attracted to such things. There is a funny sting to this tale which is a great lesson to any carp angler hungry for big carp success!!

Today following years of research I can state that various components in herbs such as these are actually used in very many of the most successful flavours in carp fishing history! Yet because my friends were not using this kind of bait at the time, I was not exactly enthusiastic about buying it, even to the point of resisting buying it. Yet my instincts to think like a carp, knowing that to be different really is the biggest edge in carp fishing made it inevitable I tested this mix and many other substances besides.

The result of course was a new personal best carp and this was followed over the years by endless more personal best carp caught on homemade baits of many bait formats and not just boilies and pastes. I made a point of always linking my free feeds, ground baits and particle mixes and even shellfish and meat free feeds etc to my hook baits. This was a big breakthrough for me. Just to illustrate this point, I visited Rainbow Lake to very specifically target and hook the world record carp at that time weighing about 85 pounds.

My unique approach immediately landed for me the Rainbow record tench for the time and this was some achievement considering how few tench are in that lake. My unique baits also hooked a big twenty pound pike too as well as numerous massive fish and I did hook that record fish after 9 days. But would all these wonderful experiences have happened for me if I had not taken considered well informed risks with doing things differently? I hope you can see the answer is obvious!

I very much doubt anything like the level of success I have had would have been achieved on popular readymade baits and I can state this because I have recorded my results on popular readymade baits for years (in great detail,) compared to my catches on my own homemade baits! If you have ever seen underwater footage of very wary fish actually fanning familiar boilies out of their way as they fed on natural food and more unusual baits then will really appreciate how being different with homemade baits really makes all the difference to your results!

One thing you really will benefit from is in realising it is in the tiny details that success comes in spades! For instance how many anglers realise that carp can easily survive by eating no angling baits at all, provided they have a good supply of very simply yet high nutritionally complex organisms such as phytoplankton and zooplankton, topped up with benthic invertebrates, plus various aquatic weed material, bottom sediment for beneficial micro-organisms plus the odd crustacean and mollusk when mature later in the autumn for example? Carp also survive by absorbing various vital nutrition naturally present and actually in solution the water around them in the form of dissolved minerals and salts etc and are absorbed directly through the skin.

Now we get to the bit about Mainline Cell boilies. Part of their mode of action is the fact that they are live. Mainline are not at all unique in making baits that are live and in fact any instant high flavour attractor type carbohydrate boilie can become active in certain conditions which makes them far more successful, far more stimulating and far more beneficial and easier for carp to digest! Even in the eighties I remember being on the bank discussing active homemade baits with Kevin Ellis who at the time held the world record carp with a fish from Lake Casein. He caught his record fish of on homemade baits and you can catch countless new personal best fish by doing that too!

The homemade boilies that Kevin Ellis made at the time were fashionably high in protein. But actually active baits do not necessarily need to have any significant protein content whatsoever in order to be highly successful for big fish! It has been known by the majority of anglers that high protein baits are mostly a waste of money as baits can be made using other approaches, alternative angles of attack, and far less protein. Protein is really about amino acids and peptide available to become solution and form a potent concentration gradient that triggers attraction and feeding responses in carp.

But very many other substances trigger feeding, and enhance feeding in many ways, including protein and simple sugar sweeteners, various lipids, essential oil components for example, different types of omega 3 rich bulk oils and so on!

The tip I will give here about Cell boilies and homemade baits is really about the multiple purpose enzyme product in these boilies. I do not want to get into trouble and mention exactly what is otherwise I would not be trusted by many well known bait makers I am friends with, but I can suggest an to replicate activity in your own homemade baits to make them potent in active ways.

It is all in the tiny details, and what I mean by this is that for instance carp are highly responsive to baits very dense in 2 and 3 chain peptides. These are true feeding triggers like certain essential and even non essential amino acids or conjugates of certain of these. Just as an aside point very many common food enhancers are rich in peptides so do check out feeding triggers as designing baits simply on these alone guarantees big success with homemade baits!

Even certain exceptionally nutritionally dense, highly abundant tiny natural foods are far more stimulatory if they are broken down into smaller components. For instance certain phytoplankton food supplements are more effective when their relatively impermeable cell wall is altered so that cellular contents can easily and very rapidly disperse when food is being digested. This saves energy and creatures are evolved to be as energy efficient as possible! Yeast is an example of a natural food that we are familiar with that can be manipulated and exploited in many ways, yet relatively few anglers exploit highly yeast orientated baits today. Why do carp anglers follow fashions when being unique is so very powerful?

Never be afraid to do your own thing, because instead of being laughed at, your fellow anglers will really question how it is that you are catching more fish than they are when using their popular readymade baits!

Just a quick thought is this one; that Rod Hutchinson used to sell a flavour he called tomato puree. Again like the herb bait example I mentioned previously most anglers would avoid this flavour thinking that is simply not something you would think would trigger feeding and besides this, who out of all your friends uses this? There was a time I was a field tester for rod Hutchinson, but prior to that time I used anything to be different whether it was available from the few bait companies operating back then; or from many other sources.

I know that my gut feelings about thinking like fish were absolutely right; that even tomato was a great edge. My catches on my tomato enhanced baits really proved this point, yet I have countless other examples that are even more potent! The fact is that tomato concentrate is very rich in beneficial lycopene, and also other potent antioxidant pigments which have cumulative impacts on carp internally. But understand this point; that tomato is rich in glutamine. This is a true feeding trigger for carp yet how many anglers realise this I wonder? I again repeat that being different is what matters!

Carp are dynamically evolving each and every moment and just like you are dynamically changing even at the genetic level in response to the food they consume! Think about the profoundness of this and you will see you truly can exploit fish and programme them internally through uniquely potent homemade bait designs!

To illustrate this point a very famous example is that maybe 6 or 7 generations ago people simply did not have a gene encoding for what is today called a sweet tooth caused by excessive exposure to refined sugar. This gene once expressed in one generation is passed down via the off spring to you and is a recognizable gene found in humans purely as a result of excessive exposure to refined sucrose ordinary white table sugar.

A couple of centuries ago it became dominant as an addictive enhancer that was exploited by the upper class and then the lower class British to make tea. Tea catechins which are bitter alkaloid type substances are thermogenic metabolism stimulants but taste bitter and unpalatable to some degree. Therefore adding sugar makes drinking tea a more enjoyable experience, and of course British also have milk in tea which is another ruse to make tea more palatable and more addictive!

Improved palatability means you consume more and of course in terms of carp fishing bait design this is a really vital thing as it maximises your chances of getting fish to take your hook bait into their mouths! It also improves feeding confidence and boosts the possibility of getting the bigger wary fish actually competing and so raising chances they will make more mistakes on your hook baits!

Baits which are active either by purposely introducing activating agents or whatever means and methods make carp baits more easy to detect as they make the constituents more water soluble, and more dense in the tiny molecules that can react with water in such a way that the water reacts more favorably in terms of stimulating carp receptors on multiple levels. This also works for dogs to produce salivation by molecules of food being in the air stimulating the senses of dogs leading to salivation. Look at dog foods (and cat foods) and their ingredients for the tiny details and you will find a few relevant secrets you can harness in your homemade baits!

Think about times you walk near a bakery and smell those yeasty aromas issuing forth and think how this has stimulated your appetite! This is the kind of effect I am referring to in making homemade baits far more potent and active.

To make homemade baits like Mainline Cell is not the point. The point is to guarantee success by whatever angles and approaches enable your baits to tip fish beyond the limits of their feeding caution! This can be done in far more ways than the majority of anglers on the banks have been conditioned over the years to believe! Mental Abuse - The 7 Most Important Things To Know

1. Sticks and stones won't break my bones" - and words won't leave any measurable physical damage, but they will cause progressive, long-term harm. Never underestimate the power of words: words are used to brainwash.

Being told you are "stupid", "ugly", "lazy" or "worthless" is never acceptable. The first times you hear it, it will hurt, naturally. In time you "may get used to" hearing it from a partner. That's when you start to internalise and believe it. When that happens you are doing the other person's work of putting you down for them. This is why your feelings of self-worth suffer increasingly over time.

The good news is that just as words have been used to bring you down, you can learn to harness the power of words to build you up and restore your confidence and belief in yourself.

Mental Abuse - The 7 Most Important Things To Know

2. You are always told that it's your fault. Somehow, whatever happens, however it starts, the ultimate blame is always yours. Notice that we are talking ultimate blame here. The blaming partner will always tell you that their behaviour was caused by what you said or did. In fact, their argument runs along the lines that you can't possibly blame them for anything, because if you hadn't said what you said, or done what you did it would never have happened.

3. You're more inclined to believe your partner than you are to believe yourself. Have you ever reeled with a sense of hurt and injustice, or seethed with anger at the way you've been treated? Have you found yourself asking: "Is it reasonable to feel like this?" "Am I misinterpreting things?" "Have I got it wrong?"

If this is you, what it means is that you have become so brainwashed you've stopped trusting in your own judgement. Your mind keeps throwing up the observations and questions because, deep down, you know that what is happening is utterly wrong. But right now you can't feel the strength of your own convictions.

4. You need your partner to acknowledge your feelings. Have you ever felt desperate to make your partner hear what you are saying and apologise for the hurtful things they've said? Have you ever felt that only they can heal the pain they've caused?

Does your need for them to validate your feelings keep you hooked into the relationship?

When a partner constantly denies or refuses to listen to your feelings, that is, unquestionably, mental abuse.

5. Your partner blows hot and cold. He can be very loving but is often highly critical of you. He may tell you how much he loves you, yet he is short on care or consideration towards you. In fact, some of the time, maybe even a lot of the time, he treats you as if you were someone he truly dislikes.

You do everything you can to make him happy, but it's never good enough. You're more like the pet dog in the relationship than you are the equal partner. Your constant efforts to get his attention and please him meet with limited success. Sometimes he'll be charmed, often he's dismissive.

If you find yourself puzzling about how your partner can treat you that way, it is because you are trying to live in a love-based relationship, when in reality you are living in a control-based relationship. The mental abuser struggles with his own feelings of worthlessness and uses his relationship to create a feeling of personal power, at his partner's expense.

6. You feel as if you are constantly walking on eggshells. There is a real degree of fear in the relationship. You have come to dread his outbursts, the hurtful things that he will find to say to you. (Maybe the same anxiety and need to please spill over into your other relationships also.)

Fear is not part of a loving relationship, but it is a vital part of a mentally abusive relationship. It enables the abuser to maintain control over you.

7. You can heal. Mentally abusive relationships cause enormous emotional damage to the loving partner who tries, against all odds, to hold the relationship together and, ultimately, can't do it, because her partner is working against her.

Whether you are currently in a mentally abusive relationship, have left one recently, or years later are still struggling with the anxieties and low self-worth and lack of confidence caused by mental abuse, it is never too late to heal.

But you do need to work with a person or a programme specifically geared to mental abuse recovery.

Women who have suffered mental abuse expect radical change of themselves, and they expect it right away. This is why they often struggle and, not uncommonly, take up with another abusive partner.

Mental abuse recovery is a gradual process. Low self-worth and limiting beliefs about what kind of future the abuse sufferer can ever hope for are the blocks that can stop women from moving on. But they are blocks that you can clear very effectively. Just as language was once used to harm you, you can now learn how language can heal you. You can overcome past mental abuse and keep yourself safe from it in the future. You can also learn to feel strong, believe in yourself and create the life and the relationships you truly want.

"The Woman You Want To Be" is a unique workbook designed to accompany you on a year long journey into emotional health and happiness.

Assertiveness - Lead Quality of Leaders

Assertiveness is not what you do, it's who you are! - Cal Le Mon

As the word itself sounds, Assertiveness is nothing but a skill to assert your self effectively to get the things done. Assertiveness is an integral part of effective communication.

There are four styles of Communication viz., Passive, Passive-Aggressive, Aggressive and Assertive Communication. All styles have their proper place and use. Among these styles of Communication, Assertive Communication is the healthiest. Assertive Communication is the style of Leaders, who wish to get the things done by motivating the team, for the benefit of the organization. Then, how Assertive Communication will become effective when you are in a leadership position?

Assertiveness - Lead Quality of Leaders

- Boundaries of all parties are respected.

- Easier to problem-solve; fewer emotional outbursts.

- It requires skills and a philosophy change, as well as lots of practice and hard work.

- When both parties do it, no one is hurt in any way and all parties win on some level.

The Assertive Person

o Expresses needs, wants and feelings directly and honestly

o Allows others to hold different views without dismissing or deprecating them

o Respects the fact that others' needs are as important as one's own

o Realizes that no one controls anyone else.

Example: "I understand that you're busy, but I'd like to see the manager as soon as possible, please."

Realising that we are not tied to old viewpoints about the world, and the awareness that we cannot control others can be a very liberating feeling. We are free to tentatively practice new ways of relating to others.

How do we move into this new style? The only way is to practice. Draw up a list of situations where you can be assertive. For example: refusing a request made at work or taking a faulty item back to the shop. Notice the way you decline or make requests. Register your expression and posture. Assertive postures are open and non-threatening, with friendly eye contact.

Practice asking others' opinions. This creates an opportunity to express yours directly and without being apologetic. Notice whether you listen attentively to what others are saying. People are more likely to listen to you if they feel that you are attentive.

Remember to use 'I' statements wherever possible. This makes the tone of the communication direct, but unchallenging.

We can classify Assertiveness into two components. These two are Assertiveness in expression and Assertiveness in action. People are expected to have some behavioural traits to become effective in both components of Assertiveness.

How to achieve effectiveness of Assertiveness in expression?

Emotional intelligence and Spiritual quotient are the two behavioural traits which help individuals to achieve effectiveness in expressive Assertiveness. Emotional intelligence is nothing but you have to be emotionally intelligent enough not to be aggressive and also polite, proactive in your expression. Your assertiveness in expression should make others proactive and not provocative to act differently. You have to be eternally patient to become highly effective in Assertive expression. When Lord Krishna went to the Court of Dhritharastra as the Emissary of Pandavas, he asserted to Duryodhana, that no one, no one, even thousands of Karnas cannot save you from the clutches of death. This is what is called Assertiveness Skills of a Leader who can control the Universe and always on the side of Dharma.

Balance in Assertiveness

Here is a story which we can relate to the need of balance in assertiveness. Assertiveness is like a string in the Sitar which has to be rightly tuned to create right kind of music. In the same way, Assertiveness in Communication must be balanced appropriately, to get the things done from the Subordinates, colleagues, peers in the work place. This quality trait is the need of the hour for the Leaders across the organizations. If one loses the balance in Assertiveness, it will become aggressiveness. To bring the employees into the 'Effective Zone' of expression and action, let us see the need of balancing in this anecdote 'Right level'.

"One day two musicians happened to pass by the tree under which Buddha was sitting in meditation. One was saying to the other. "Do not tighten the strings of your sitar too much or they will. Do now keep them too loose either, they will produce no music. Keep to the right level!"

Assertiveness and Perception

Assertiveness can change the perception and may lead to misconception: Let us see this in this well known story 'The Brahmin and the goat'.

Once, a Brahmin was carrying a goat on his shoulders. Three rogues saw him, and formulated a plan to acquire the goat.

One of them went up to the Brahmin and asked, most politely, "Why are you carrying that dog on your shoulders, Sir? The Brahmin shouted at him, and went his way, muttering angrily.

He had not walked long when the second rogue met him and expressed surprise at seeing a Brahmin carrying a dead calf. Again the Brahmin shouted, but now not so confidently; and he went on. He kept glancing nervously at his load to make sure it was a goat, and a live one.

Soon, he met the third rogue, who said, "Sir, it is not improper for a Brahmin even to touch a donkey, let alone carry it on his shoulders, as you are doing?"

Now the Brahmin was really puzzled, and scared. "Am I carrying a demon," he asked himself, "which can appear as different things to different men?" He flung the goat down in panic and ran away. The rogue picked up the goat, and happily joined his friends. The plan had worked.

The lesson one can learn from this story is that even if you assert lies, they may be effective for immediate gains and definitely not in the long run. The kind of rogues described in the story may some times spoil your chances to move ahead in the workplace. Beware of this kind of misguiding and misleading assertiveness which may harm employees, careers and organizations. This, we can relate to the 'Satyam Fiasco' of financial misleading by the promoters themselves for selfish gains and ultimately spoiling the image of organization built with sweat and toil of 53,000 employees over a period of more than two decades. Do we need any proof that now-a-days; some organizations are run by Gobles?

Spiritual Quotient and Assertiveness

Life is a cleansing process. Spiritual quotient will help you cleanse from your sins, with which your heart becomes impure and loses the confidence to become assertive. A person with lack of confidence cannot assert himself either in interview or in the workplace. Spiritual Quotient will bestow the power to assert oneself and succeed in their professional as well as personal life. In fact, if you are spiritual, there are no two lives like professional or personal life. All mingle like one - two bodies and one soul and contribute to the individual's success without any doubt. One has to develop this Spiritual quotient through meditation i.e. Sadhana. There is a proven three fold path to enhance our Spiritual Quotient, through which we can assert ourselves to control others thoughts and actions.

Sadhana

Aradhana and

Upasana

People who know how to translate life's problems and struggles into spiritual issues can often find more gratifying and rewarding solutions to these problems through their spiritual IQs.

EIGHT SIGNS OF HIGH SQ

1. Flexibility

2. Self-awareness

3. An ability to face and use suffering

4. The ability to be inspired by a vision

5. An ability to see connections between diverse things (thinking holistically)

6. A desire and capacity to cause as little harm as possible

7. A tendency to probe and ask fundamental questions

8. An ability to work against convention

Where you can find these qualities in the Modern Age? I could see these qualities only Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. Let us see this anecdote from the life of a Preacher, which depicts the effectiveness of assertiveness when you are free from the guilt of having harmful habits.

Ramu, like some others in his village Musori, got addicted to eating an herb which tasted nice, but was injurious to health. He would not listen even to his grandmother when told to stop the habit. So she took him to a Swamiji in the same village and requested him to advice Ramu. Instead, the Swamiji asked the old lady to bring the boy back after a month. A month later the Swamiji asked Ramu to abandon the habit and as he was obeyed by the whole village, Ramu gave up the habit. Now, the grandmother wondered why the Swamiji did not give the same advice a month back, and asked him. The great man replied, "A month ago I myself was addicted to the herb. It took me a month to give up the habit."

In this anecdote, the Swamiji is having the same habit like Ramu, which he cannot get rid of, and could not direct the boy assertively due to this weakness. Once he got rid of the habit after one month, he could assertively direct the boy to give up immediately. This is as simple as that if a father is smoking, he cannot stop his Children from smoking, as he lost the power of assertiveness in expression due to his bad habit. This kind of self-control and assertiveness can be achieved only through 'Sadhana'.

Four behavioural traits to demonstrate Assertiveness in expression and action

Our scriptures say that to get the things done, one has to follow the path of four upayas (ideas) i.e. four ways of action plan. These four action plans are called Sama, Daana, Bheda and Dandopaya.

'Sama' means 'persuasion'. A leader has to pursue his subordinates to get the things done through continuous persuasion by explaining the pros and cons of the situation. Generally, many corporate leaders persuade their employees to assert their view point and get the things done to their favour and for the benefit of the organization.

'Daana' means using carrot. We all know the concept of carrot and stick. Whenever, there is a need, the corporate leaders show the carrot to woo the employees and if they do not need the services of the staff, they use the 'stick' and compel to resign without issuing pink slips. Most of the corporate bosses do not want to give away 'Daana' i.e. 'Carrot' to woo their employees, and if possible they will continue to squeeze the employees till they resist and revolt against this kind of behaviour of superiors. These kinds of bosses only look for exceptional performance and never exercise appraisals.

'Bheda' means 'creating rift', manipulating or mismanaging relationships. This kind of behaviour is normal from the Bosses who spread politics down the line which is inevitable and part of corporate politics. This kind of behaviour from bosses is expected when they want to assert that they do not want see any kind of Unions and labour unrest or knowledge labour resistance in the organization.

'Danda' means punishment. An enemy or an employee must be punished with all assertion, if he does not perform for the benefit of the organization and selfish to the core only taking care of his personal interests. This is the ultimate action to be initiated where indiscipline is the order of the day and chaos is spread across the organization and performance was marred with the behaviour of even one employee. A rotten apple must be removed from the basket; otherwise it will spoil the whole basket. Organisations cannot afford to use this action plan against employees, as it will spoil the 'performance culture' of the Company. Many bosses feel that if one is punished with all the assertion i.e. to the open knowledge of public and employees, it will discipline the organization for better. But this perception of assertiveness in action is not worth discussing, which is not at all worth pursuing in these days of knowledge economy.

One has to master these traits and demonstrate with balance, according to the need of the situation, to become Leader with all the assertiveness required to run an organisation.

Mahatma Gandhi and Assertiveness in Action

Mahatma Gandhi is a Karma Yogi. When Independence was achieved in the midnight of 15th August, 1947, Gandhiji's immediate reaction is that the Congress must be abolished as the purpose of the party was served successfully i.e. throwing away British from the land of India. But many leaders opposed to abolish Congress to enjoy the fruits of their labour i.e. power. Mahatma Gandhi was in a slum in Kolkata serving the poor in that night, when entire India was celebrating the spirit of freedom. This is what is truly called 'Assertiveness in Action', where 'Karma Yogi' never looks for results and leave for others to enjoy.

'Yes' or 'No' - assertiveness will have the power, if it is uttered from the heart with the soulful support of Spiritual Quotient i.e. unparallel 'Sadhana'. A great 'Spiritual Sadhaka' himself, Gandhiji knows this truth with deep conviction. Thus his famous quote is apt to be mentioned here for our further learning experience. "A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble." A true leader of masses in his own style, Gandhiji's leadership qualities can be named as 'Gandhian Leadership' or popularly known as 'Gandhigiri'! One day, when he was travelling from Durban to Pretoria in the first class compartment of a train, a British man boarded the compartment. On seeing Gandhiji, the British man got furious. He called the Railway officer, and both ordered him to get out of the train. Since Gandhiji had purchased a first class ticket, he refused to do so. However, they paid no heed to him. Gandhiji also did not budge. Finally the police were summoned. They pushed him out of the compartment and threw his luggage out of the window. Gandhiji had to spend the whole night on the platform.

It is a known fact that Gandhiji's life has changed after this incident and he firmly decided to fight against the mighty British Empire, which has already sown its seeds of oppression in India. Gandhiji's assertiveness in action has seen the British thrown out of India and he was fondly titled by the nation as 'Father of Nation'. This incident made Mahatma Gandhi to become assertive in action through out his life and he never diverted from his path of convictions.

Conclusion

Assertiveness is the quality of Leaders. No one can become leader without abundance of assertiveness skills. Every Leader will have their own way of demonstrating their assertiveness to get the things done in the workplace. One can identify the assertiveness of Organisations with the way they are exposing themselves to the general public. Lack of assertiveness means lack of confidence and lack of confidence means, lack of leadership qualities. A Leader without Assertiveness Skills cannot manage people. Assertiveness is the key to master the art of people management.

Finally, as propounded by Sharon Anthony Bower 'The basic difference between being assertive and being aggressive is how our words and behavior affect the rights and well being of others.'
