Effective Communication Techniques For Health Care Facilities Managers

As unique and varied as the competencies are to function in our role as effective facilities administrators, the ability to communicate effectively nears the top of the list. In the development of the dozens of position profiles I've compiled, the ability to communicate within the given culture of an organization maintains a prominent place in the set of required skills.

Conversely, I've observed the demise of many talented facilities managers predicated on the inability to translate issues into a concise and timely transfer of information. There exists a perception that organizational communications is not one of an "engineer's" strongest areas of expertise.

Complex Information

Effective Communication Techniques For Health Care Facilities Managers

Because of the unique nature of the role, the healthcare facilities manager possesses a challenging audience with an equally challenging message. With a vocabulary very distinct from the clinical, fiscal, and governing world, our communications commonly involve a dialect of codes, infrastructure, and engineering terms that are unfamiliar and often not understood. Projects we deal with involve many disciplines and the results are contingent upon a clear understanding of the strategies we develop and communicate.

The best communication strategy is to establish "need to know" expectations at all levels. Many executives require ongoing and continuous updates, while many of our "customers" would prefer only information that directly affects their area of accountability. It is best to set communication expectations case by case and be diligent in fulfilling this anticipation.

Good News, Bad News

Regardless of your audience, keep communications relevant and focused. As the saying goes "Few care about storms you encountered, but rather the safe arrival in port". In our unique world of facilities operations, many communications are critical to the success of the organization's mission. With that criticality, comes a tendency "sensationalize" the communication of the contributing issues. Do not editorialize your message by providing only the information that is relevant and pertinent to the listener.

Offer Solutions

Our colleagues look to us for solutions. Don't dwell on the problems that contributed to the situation, but rather offer a series of recommendations that prioritize available solutions. Communicate viable options backed by sound justification as well as a clear picture of the pros and cons of individual recommendations.

Effective communication is an art and is crucial to any successful relationship. Work to design effective communication skills based on your organization's needs and implement a delivery strategy that fulfills the needs of the listening audience.

Crime Scene Forensics - Analyzing Broken Glass Found at a Crime Scene

Suppose a victim called police and notified that somebody committed a drive-by shooting on his house. Crime scene investigators (CSI's) then show up to investigate the crime. One of the things they look at is the broken glass through which the bullet or bullets pass. Such evidence can tell a story to the technician with a keen eye for the details found in broken glass.

The manner in which glass breaks many times presents clues with regard to how it was broken. For instance, glass that was broken by a speeding baseball will have a different pattern of fracture than glass that was broken by a speeding bullet.

Particular break characteristics allow a forensic scientist to ascertain the direction from which the impact came. They include a special kind of stress-fracture lines called conchoidal lines. Conchoidal lines are lines that emanate from the site of impact. When viewing glass through its thickness, these lines curve out and away from the point of impact in a curve resembling a seashell curve.

Crime Scene Forensics - Analyzing Broken Glass Found at a Crime Scene

If the investigator takes a closer look at the conchoidal lines, he can see tiny lines that radiate almost 90 degrees from the conchoidal lines. These fracture lines are known as hackle marks.

Cracks in windows and other flat plates of glass such as windshields tend to radiate and concentrate. When viewing the glass perpendicularly from the surface, one can see radial cracks that radiate outward from the impact point. Picture this like the spokes that radiate from the center of a wheel.

Again, when viewing the glass perpendicularly from the surface, one would also find cracks that concentrate around the impact point and are called concentric cracks. Concentric cracks are cracks that form progressively larger circles around the impact point. Picture this as a circle within a circle within a circle....all surrounding the impact point.

If a speeding bullet strikes a window and penetrates it but does not completely break it, the destruction may leave behind a hole accompanied or not accompanied by the aforementioned fracture lines.

On one side of the impact (the entrance side), the hole will be small and clean. On the other side of impact (the exit side), a small conical piece of glass would have been removed. CSI's would normally view the glass from both sides to determine a bullet's trajectory; i.e. whether the bullet was fired from the outside of the house in as in the case of a drive-by shooting or vice versa.

The next time you watch your favorite CSI or Forensic Files TV show, you will have a better understanding of how broken glass is studied in a crime lab in order to bring a perpetrator to justice.

Cyber Bullies

The technology of today has brought a database of unlimited potential to the finger tips of everyone all over the world. This database is the internet. The internet has proved an invaluable tool for communication, research, business, and even fun. But this technology has also invented a new way of hurting people (especially teens) and is much worse than anything we have experienced before. Teenagers have turned to the internet to intimidate, scare, and hurt their peers.

When I was in high school cyber bullying was just starting to become popular. Usually when people got in a argument, fight, etc..., they would work it out face to face. It was a very rare thing that someone would turn to the internet to hurt someone. Now though, teenagers are turning to the internet even when there is no problem. They do it because they think it's funny, or they do it just because they are bored. It's amazing to me that you would write insults about someone and post it in a place where the whole world can see it. What ever happened to common decency? Are people really becoming such cowards that they can't deal with their problems in person? I would like to tell you a story of a girl I know who had a cyber bully post derogatory things about her. For all you cyber bullies out there I want you to realize just how much pain you inflict on people, and for everyone else I want to show you how she dealt with her problem, and what you can do to help yours if you to are a victim.

A few years ago in high school I was friends with a girl named Erin. She was always made fun off all throughout high school for no good reason like I'm sure many of you have been or are, but dealt with it. She never let any of it bother her. One day I asked her how she could take being made fun of all the time. Her response was "I don't care what other people think of me, it's what I think of me that counts. After high school I'm never going to have to see these people ever again. I just keep my eyes on college so I can go to a place where people actually want to learn, and garbage like half the people in this school aren't allowed in." These words stuck with me, and I still use the principals behind them to help me in current problems. Then one day she got in to an argument with another girl who was making fun of her. They got in to a screaming match in the hallway and had to be separated. A few days went by and it seemed like the matter was over, but then fliers advertising a blog started to appear around the school. They were made on regular paper, and contained no information except the blog url. I never paid any attention to them because I didn't know what they were, and between all my sports practices and homework I didn't really have the time. In turns out that I should have taken a look at the blog because I might have been able to make a difference. I didn't though, and a few days later Erin committed suicide. When I found out I was devastated, and surprisingly so were all the people who had made fun of her all those years. They didn't want her to kill herself, they were just having fun. A few days after I heard the news, I heard a rumor that she had taken her life because she was so upset and distraught about some internet blog about her. That is when I made the connection between the fliers in school, and what had happened to Erin.

Cyber Bullies

I finally got around to going to the blog and was so upset with what I saw. The girl she got in an argument with had taken obscene pictures of her sleeping, and in the shower, and had posted them on the internet. The blog also repeatedly made fun of her and used phrases like "she should kill herself" and "no one likes her, wish she was dead, no one would miss her." This just drove Erin over the edge, and she did the unthinkable. She realized that people all over the world had now seen her naked, and read that everyone hates her, and it was just to much. A few days later the girl who made the blog (I won't use her name for obvious reasons) was arrested. But, to everyone surprise she was released only having to do 100 hours of community service. The police said Erin killed herself, it was her choice and the other girl may have pushed her over the edge but what she did is not illegal. That girl who made the blog got off with just a warning, a slap on the wrist, but she would end up paying a higher price. A few months later Erins older brother who I played football with killed her. He was then sent to prison for the rest of his life.

Sounds like something out of book or soap opera right. Well it really happened, and I am much wiser for it. I realize just how much damage a cyber bully can cause, and is the reason why I have chosen to write this article. Now earlier in the article I made the statement that I would show you how to deal with a cyber bully if you to are a victim. I am a man of my word, so if you have a problem with a cyber bully here is what you should do.....

1. Go to the police!

In recent years the punishment for crimes like the one above has increased. If you go to the police the blog can be taken offline, and the person who made the blog will be arrested, and prosecuted.

2. Contact the blog site

To make a blog someone needs to use a blog host. Usually if you visit the blog the host of the blog will be listed, and will have a way to contact them. Send an email to the blog host and tell them you found a blog used for bullying another person. In most cases the blog will be removed in just a few hours after they receive the complaint.

3. Go to your principal

Tell your principal that someone made a blog of you, and is using it to hurt you. Your principal should then (in most cases) contact the police, contact the blog owners parents, and in some cases the person who made the blog will be expelled from school

4. Go tell your parents

It's not healthy to keep all this hurt and pain to yourself. You need to talk about it before you fall in to depression and you start to think about doing what Erin did. If you go to your parents and tell them what happened they can help you emotionally, as well as help you pursue the matter with the police and the school.

Flu Shot Ingredients

The major flu shot ingredients are dead influenza viruses. There may be any number of different flu viruses circulating at any one time, but pharmaceutical companies only choose three as annual flu shot ingredients. Even if you take an annual flu shot, you could still contract another flu virus and still come down with the flu. So, it is still important to protect your immune system and practice good health habits. Common flu vaccine side effects include body aches, low grade fever and soreness at the point of injection. There are some rare, but serious flu vaccine side effects that concern many people.

In addition to the major flu shot ingredients, pharmaceutical companies add preservatives. Until recently there were no preservative free flu shots. The addition of the preservative thimerosal to flu shot ingredients has caused illness and injury. Thimerosal is mercury based and is believed to have been the cause of flu vaccine side effects in many people. Of major concern is the increase of autism in recent years and many researchers and doctors believe that thimerosal, a known neurotoxin, used as flu shot ingredients and in other childhood vaccines is the cause.

Some researchers and doctors believe that flu shot ingredients, including thimerosal and aluminum, increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease. This, of course, is not one of the common flu vaccine side effects and since Alzheimer's does not develop immediately after taking the shot, then the link can not be proven. A prominent physician and researcher showed that people who had five consecutive influenza vaccinations between the years 1970 and 1980 were ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer's than were individuals who had none, one or two.

Flu Shot Ingredients

It is believed that some people cannot shed mercury from their systems and it builds up in their brains causing nerve and brain damage. In addition, some people are allergic to mercury and thimerosal and can experience serious allergic reaction as flu vaccine side effects. Some states have banned mercury from flu shot ingredients intended for use in children and pregnant women. But, while health advocates have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban thimerosal from flu shot ingredients, nothing has been done at this time. Many manufacturers continue to add thimerosal to their flu shot ingredients.

The dead influenza viruses which are the major flu shot ingredients are grown in chicken eggs. So, people who are allergic to chicken eggs could have serious flu vaccine side effects. Some people blame the onset of chronic fatigue on flu vaccine side effects, but there is no scientific research supporting this belief.

The influenza nasal spray vaccine is chosen by some as an alternative to the flu shot. Ingredients in the nasal spray include weakened live influenza viruses. The common nasal spray flu vaccine side effects include runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. The nasal spray flu vaccine is preservative free, but is only approved for use in healthy people between the ages of 5 and 49.

Concern over flu shot ingredients and flu vaccine side effects raise questions in the minds of some people as to whether or not healthy people, with a healthy immune system even need an annual influenza vaccine. Alternatives include the use of natural immunity boosting products. Some feel that these products may even reduce the likelihood of contracting the flu, the common cold and other viruses. Most natural immune system boosters have no unwanted side effects and carry none of the risks associated with flu vaccine side effects and flu shot ingredients. Do Flu Shots Have Mercury In Them?

Do flu shots have mercury in them? Yes, says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, commonly referred to as the CDC, in their facts on the flu shot question and answer guide.

Opinions about whether mercury in flu shots is a threat to human health may vary, but no one can deny the facts on the flu shot. Mercury is used in the manufacturing of and as a preservative in most flu shot vaccines. Even those vaccines that are labeled preservative free have trace amounts of mercury left over from the manufacturing process, but because the content is too low to act as a preservative, they are called preservative free.

Questions like "do flu shots have mercury in them" may be asked for many reasons. Mercury contamination in fish and the environment is of great concern. Mercury poisoning can cause illness and death. Some people have severe allergic reactions to mercury. Mercury is a known neurotoxin, meaning that it damages or destroys nerve tissues. Mercury has been linked to autism and Alzheimer's.

Do Flu Shots Have Mercury In Them?

The facts on the flu shot presented by the CDC maintain that there is "no convincing evidence of harm" from mercury in flu shots, but there was sufficient evidence for New York to pass a law in 2006 banning thimerosal (a mercury based preservative) from flu shots intended for use in children and pregnant women. But, even with this ban, the answer to "do flu shots have mercury in them" in New York is still, yes. As previously stated trace amounts of mercury are present even in preservative free flu shots.

In 1999, the Public Health Service agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics and vaccine manufacturers agreed that mercury should be reduced or eliminated from vaccines as a precautionary measure. But, still the answer to the question "do flu shots have mercury in them" is yes. The facts on the flu shot presented by the CDC maintain that the best protection from influenza is the annual flu shot, but ultimately it is a personal choice.

The 2010 Ford F-150 Has a Host of Engine Sizes

The all-new Ford F-150 has a wealth of engine options that is suited to any consumer's driving taste. These engines range from small, economy-minded engines, to huge, monster truck V8s. No matter what you are looking for, the new 2010 Ford F-150 has an engine option that you need.

The first engine that we are going to take a look at is the 4.6L V8. This motor puts out a respectable 202 horsepower at 4350 RPM. It also puts out 260 ft lb of torque, which is enough to haul almost anything. This engine is a carryover from the previous year. This motor is an all-aluminum engine. Users of this engine can expect to get anywhere from 15 miles per gallon while driving in the city, to 20 miles per gallon when driving on the highway. There is another version of this engine that is put into the SuperCrew models. This enhanced model gets around 292 horsepower, and produces around 320 ft lbs of torque.

The next model in our lineup is the 5.4L V8. This motor is geared towards towing and hauling. It puts out around 310 horsepower, which is enough to pass virtually anyone on the highway. This thing also puts out a massive 365 ft lb of torque, which means you will be able to tow any trailer imaginable. Drivers of the Ford with this can expect gas mileage numbers around 11 miles per gallon for stop-and-go traffic inside of the city, and 16 miles per gallon for straightforward highway driving. This engine represents the highest form of performance. It is also a carryover from the previous year. However, Ford has decided to do away with the flare-side and step-side models. Now people who want this truck will have to get used to the style-side model.
